Q & A with Laura

I started refinishing furniture when we moved into a bigger house in September 2016, so almost 5 years.

I started refinishing when I updated and Ethan Allen bedroom set that I had inherited from my grandmother for our bedroom. I enjoyed it so much I did more smaller projects around the house and then eventually started selling it locally on Facebook marketplace.

I refinish furniture for both personal use and sell it locally and US wide via my Etsy shop.

If I had to pick one style it would probably be mid century modern. I really enjoy refinishing wood, and the veneers on those pieces have spectacular grain.

My favorite medium probably would be acrylic or enamel base paint. I like using those in my sprayer as they create a near flawless finish and do not require a topcoat. Topcoats can be very stressful for me...LOL!

I really love this MCM style piece I transformed. When I found it at the thrift store it was missing it’s legs and had some water damage near the bottom. It just looked really sad. I had a really cool vision of a white and wood look. Once stripped the wood-grain was amazing! I did have some hiccups along the way- when I painted the drawers I thought I had grabbed primer when in fact it was latex paint. Ugh! So I had to strip that all back off and do it again. But after all that work and adding new legs, it came out beautiful.

My favorite color probably would be purple! I’ve only done one purple piece in my five years though...LOL!

Wow! I have lots of other interests! I really enjoy running and working out. When I have the time I like to train for endurance events such as marathons or Iron-man triathlons. Recently I am involved in helping to coach Ohio University‘s women’s volleyball team for their fall 2021 season- I played Ohio University (many years ago) and still have a passion for the game. I also love to play with my 3 kids and take them swimming or hiking.

Refinishing furniture is not for the faint of heart. I’ve learned that usually cutting corners or the easy way out creates more of a mess and increases the time on the project. Doing the right things like prepping well, sanding, priming- only benefit you in the end.

I absolutely love all the Zibra brushes I’ve used but the palm pro would probably be my favorite. It’s lightweight and the handle on it is smaller and more comfortable for me to hold. I’m able to get into tighter spaces, like inside cabinets better, and it really creates smooth and clean lines when painting!
