Q & A with Mare

I started refinishing furniture pieces in my own home about 5 years ago.
It actually started with a pair of front porch rocking chairs! We had been gifted a set of outdoor rockers when we moved into our home in 1998. Fast forward to 2016, when they really needed an update, so I did some research, bought some paint and painted every refinisher’s least favorite project-CHAIRS! That led to me updating pieces in my own home, then for family and friends, like so many others. My story differs a bit from others because I started as an empty-nester on the college tuition budget, but wanting updates. I also missed the creative outlet that can go hand in hand with a young family and a new home, so refinishing furniture definitely filled a void for me!
I actually do both! I continue to update for my home and now for my kids as they move into their apartments. I actually love when a friend or family member wants one of my pieces. Its so flattering!
I really love all styles of furniture, but if I had to choose, I’d have to pick Hepplewhite style! I find it so classic, usually so well constructed and honestly can be refinished in so many different finishes, and always look good! They can be raw, washed with paint, chippy, clean and classic or bold! I love their shape, and usually NEVER replace the hardware!
Another tough question! I use many different paint mediums and all for different effects. I do refinish a variety of different styles, so i usually pick the paint for the desired outcome. However, if I’m marooned on a desert island, Im taking milk paint with me! It’s so versatile, for chippy and beyond!
This is such a tough question! I’ve had a few, and I always hope my new favorite is my next piece, but I’d have to say that I love my most recent piece. It’s an off white Hepplewhite style buffet, with a beautiful bleached top. I love this style and I’m picking this one because it all just came together the way I envisioned it. That doesn’t always happen, especially when painting and bleaching mahogany!
Any shade of Blue!
I love to read, I attempt golf, spend time with my family and friends and of course my dog Molly! I also spend a lot of time thinking about refinishing furniture!
GO FOR IT! Try new colors, and new techniques, because you may find your true niche. Mistakes are inevitable, but promote learning and growth. I always tell people, “It’s only paint!” And we all know that paint is only permanent on our clothes (and unfortunately, my driveway)
I love them all, but once again on that deserted Island, I'm taking the fan brush and the palm pro! I feel they are so versatile regardless of the piece. I love the ease of the palm pro, and love to use the fan brush to apply finishing oils.
